Sesame Orange Chicken

Sesame Orange Chicken - Homemade

3 of us in our family LOVE Chinese Food (my oldest hates anything breaded so he won't even touch this, my little health nut.)
Our favorite is Orange Chicken.  I make a homemade version and it is sweetly delicious and easy to prepare.  Sure to be a crowd pleaser at your family's dinner table.

The meal serves 4 and takes about 45 minutes from start to finish.

Ingredients:
Breading on Chicken:
2 boneless skinless chicken breasts (cut into cubes)
1/2 cup all purpose flour
1 tsp baking powder
1 egg (beaten)
1/2 cup of water (or as much as needed to make batter smooth)
3 tbsp corn starch
salt (just a pinch to taste)

2 Tbsp on Vegetable or Canola Oil

Sauce:
1/4 cup ketchup
1/4 cup honey
2 tsp sugar
2 tbsp white vinegar
1/2 cup water
Juice of one orange
2 tbsp corn starch
1 tsp sesame oil
sprinkle of garlic powder
sesame seeds

Ingredients Below:

Cut the chicken into cubes using Kitchen Shears (this makes it really easy) set aside in a bowl.

In a separate Bowl, beat 1 egg

Add in Flour, Baking Powder, Corn Starch, Salt, and Water to the beaten egg.  Mix well with a whisk.

Take the Chicken and mix it with the batter.  Really stir it around to coat all sides of the chicken.

Add the Vegetable Oil or Canola Oil to the wok or non stick pan and let it heat up!

For the Next step, use salad tongs to remove the chicken from the batter and put it in the wok with oil.
Make sure you have another pair of tongs to remove the cooked chicken from the hot oil (to not cross contaminate) and another clean bowl to put the cooked chicken pieces in.

Once you place the chicken in the pan, make sure you reduce it to a medium heat so you don't burn the outside of the breading (if this happens just continue to turn the chicken so it is cooked though and doesn't burn further.)
If you have the temp just right you should be able to place a piece of chicken in the oil, cook for about 3 minutes on each side.

Now cooking the other side of the chicken, make sure you cook each piece fully.  When you think it may be done, just cut one piece open to see if it has been cooked through.  If its all cooked just remove it and the other pieces from the oil and put in the bowl you reserved for the cooked chicken.
You will repeat this chicken cooking step a few times to get all pieces of chicken cooked.

The Bowl of the Cooked Chicken Pieces

Next in a different mixing bowl whisk together all ingredients for the sauce.

Clean the wok that you cooked the chicken in and return it to the stove.  Pour the sauce mixture into the wok and let cook.  Once it starts to bubble (as seen in the photo below) stir and keep stirring for about 1 minute.  It will become gel like (if you feel it is too sticky, add a little bit of water to loosen it up.)

Once your sauce is done, add the chicken to the pan and stir to coat the chicken.  Remove meal from pan and put in a serving dish.  Cut up green onion and add to the top for some flavor and color.

Goes great with a side of rice!!

A thumbs up from Evan!!

  1. Could I request a blog? Lol What is your grocery budget each week and how do you plan menus? Based on sales or coupons? .

  2. Hi Tracey,
My grocery budget is $120 for two weeks. I shop one week and go small shopping (for milk, bread) the next week too. Just for items that we are out of. I go grocery shopping on Monday and keep all my meat in the fridge. There was a great sale on chicken breast at Kroger so we are having chicken again tonight, lol. I keep it thawed so I have no excuses not to cook a family meal. Its working out great for us. I do follow a meal plan, I make this on Sunday (for shopping on Monday.) I always go to Kroger (they send me special coupons that are based on what I normally buy (they track your purchases through your Kroger card so I have ton of coupons for Organic and Natural foods.) I also stock my Kroger card with coupons from the Kroger app to my iPhone. This gets me even more saving. Other than that that is all I do. So far its working out pretty good. Oh and I also try to get fresh veggies that I can use in more than one meal, the green onion have been in a few so far, chicken in more than one, and lots of the pantry items I have on hand. I try not to buy anything I'll only use once and then never again (like Sriracha sauce, only going to use that once.)

  3. $120 for two weeks? I spend that weekly now, but I also have the daycare. Also wondered if Kroger is better for prices than Meijer.

  4. You do feed a lot more mouths with daycare, so maybe double that?? I do find Meijer to be higher for food prices and I end up spending more because they sell everything there :o)
